First answer: carrier pigeon. Seriously! Whoever thought "Man, I can train this here bird to fly from wherever I am to home with a message tied to it's leg!" That guy was a genius. Second answer: e-mail. I mean, we have an institution that has been around since the birth of our country, the postal system, and in the span on a few years it is basically replaced. That's power!
You mentioning email makes me think of a conversation I had with a Chief sometime ago. He spoke about how newer Airmen entering into the Air Force know nothing about being a people person or being able to effectively communicate because these days everyone is so quick to send an email rather than pick up the phone or walk down the hall to see the person they need to speak with. He's old school, which he admitted. But after thinking about it, he was right.
Email is such an amazing invention, as is the telephone...but being able to communicate effectively (to me) means being well rounded with all forms of communication. And with well rounded I mean knowing the basics...netiquette, opening/body/closing of a letter or story, proper greetings and gestures when carrying on a face to face conversation...things of that nature.
...I know I went off on a bit of a tangent, but thanks for sharing.
P.S. I think the postal system in itself is genius. Especially in present time with deployed troops...Mail can travel ALL the way around the world and more times than not, still be intact. Amazing isnt it...
Cell phone technology is pretty cool - I had one when they were mounted in the car. But more than that, I appreciate the ease and convienence of texting. It's so easy to pick up my iPhone and quickly message someone across the U.S. for a quick reply. Knowledge moves fast with texting - everyone knows in an instant what's going on with family and the like. Like every piece of technology there's the good and bad and like all things that have the potential to be harmful, you have to do it in moderation.
